October 16, 2017

Hello Folks:

What a week!!! Rainy,  Cold. warm, muggy.  hot, cool, cloudly, humid, sunny!!!   But we are not  complaining!!!  We  are very grateful and say  prayers daily that we  live in the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina that so far has  missed many of the horrible weather traumas that many areas  have experienced. For your calendar, the next special event is the Yadkin Valley Grape Festival in downtown Yadkinville on Saturday, October 21st.  Of course, RagApple Lassie will be there pouring samples of its awesome wines   followed by the traditional Low Country Boil at RagApple Lassie Winery.   See details  below.

LAST CALL for reservations for  Our Annual Low Country Boil  catered by Harry’s Place (Frank’s favorite dive)  Saturday, October 21st, five to eight p.m. by reservation only!  $45.00 per person  and includes two glasses of wine and or beer  and live music by the ever popular Gold Standard Band . Call 336-367-6000 to make your reservation. And remember  RagApple Lassie now serves White Street Craft Beers from Wake Forest, NC .

ENGLISH TEA, served in an English Parlor setting, accompanied with traditional teas, wines and entertainment.  Thurs, November 16  at 2:00 p.m.  $25.00 per person  and reservations are required. (P.S.  This Tea is being presented by the Dirty Fingers Garden Club, of which Lenna’s sister and Walt’s wife is one of the leaders and is one of the very few rural garden clubs in North Carolina. You will be amazed!!  This TEA has been offered at their Meeting House in the mountains each spring  and fall for five years and is always a sell-out.  So Lenna begged long and hard to get this group of ladies to bring their famous  TEA to RagApple Lassie).

We hope to see you soon!
Rainbows and joy
Lenna and Frank
May you always have Love to share,
Health to spare, and friends that care!

At RagApple Lassie the welcome is warm even if the weather is cool!

Hello Folks:

UPDATE on the Grandsons End-of-School sports report:
Grandsons 1, 2 and 3 each had phenomenal games last week.
Grandson No. 1 is off to the second round of baseball competition
Grandson No. 2 won the opportunity to play in the second round of tennis competition
Grandson No. 3 (by age) is the golfer and his team won fourth place in the Division 1A Championship but remember, all five players are just sophomores!!! But the awesome story that Grandson 3 can tell his grandchildren someday about the experience of playing at Pinehurst goes something like this!!!!!!!

On the opening drive of a Par Three Hole, his ball rolled onto a paved cart path, rolled downhill, under a bridge and across water for hundreds of yards before stopping in the edge of the rough. While the judges and coaches were trying to find his ball and discussing exactly how to handle this unique situation, and his mother was panicked that he would take 15 shots for this hole alone, HE calmly lined himself up in the direction of the hole he thought the hole was in (it was so far away he could not see the flag or the hole or anything in between except a lake to his right)) and hit an absolutely phenomenal drive over the top of the curved bridge up the fairway and onto the green just like a Pro!!! And he finished this hole with a bogey!!!!

Upcoming: Next Saturday, May 21st is the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Elkin showcasing the wines of the Yadkin Valley Appellation! Hours are 11 - 5 pm at the Elkin Municipal Park.

However, if you want to avoid the traffic of a festival yet will sample awesome wines, the Tasting Room at RagApple Lassie will be open as usual, noon to six!

Saturday, May 28 - Memorial Day Weekend - Comic Genius, LES LONG, a North Carolina native and nationally renowned television show host and radio personality brings his rib-splitting humor to RagApple Lassie! Come taste our wines and be thoroughly entertained. Noon to six pm.

Join RagApple Lassie Vineyards and Yadkin River Adventures to experience the The Magic of Wine and Water. Choose your date: June 11th, or July 30th, or August 26th for a leisurely trip down the mighty Yadkin River with a picnic lunch and capped off with a Wine Tasting and Cheese Sampling at RagApple Lassie.! Details at www.ragapplelassie.com.

We shall look forward to seeing you soon!

RagApple Lassie welcomes MAY with new fun events each week! Come join the fun!!!

Hello Folks!

It's May! It's May - so it's now permissable to go barefoot according to one of the old-fashioned sayings from the era of Lenna and Frank's youth. It was verboten that children were not allowed to play barefoot outside until May 1st! And just in case you are interested, another old-fashioned rule that mothers adherred to without fail, was "white clothing or shoes (with the exception of our white Converse basketball shoes) should not be worn before Memorial Day or after Labor Day" and shoes with more color than black, brown, navy or white were considered tastless!!! Just imagine the reactions of my parent's generation in today's fashion world!!

Honoring the request of many of you for the return of our tasting room 'music,' RagApple Lassie has successfully located outstanding talent performing only original material and we can promise you will be awed and amazed! Come see for yourself!

So mark your calendars:
Saturday, May 7, we welcome talented, DAN LIVINGSTON, a talented fusion jazz guitar musician. His original music is an electic mix of bluegrass, western, pop and blues with influences of Clapton, Santana, Hendrix, Hank Williams, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck!! www.danhouseditties.com

Saturday, May 14, we welcome one of own, SAM TAYLOE, whose parents we have known long before he was born, and his outstanding homegrown TIME SAWYER BAND playing reaL music for real people. Time Sawyer blends a grassroots feel with heart-felt lyrics and we promise you will be totally enthralled! www.timesawyer.com

Saturday, May 21, is the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Elkin. And yes, RagApple Lassie will be at the festival and YES, RagApple Lassie will be open at winery - noon to six!!

Saturday, May 28 - Memorial Day Weekend - Comic Genius, LES LONG, a North Carolina native and nationally renowned television show host and radio personality brings his rib-splitting humor to RagApple Lassie!

And an upcoming teaser: RagApple Lassie and Yadkin River Adventures invite you to join the Magic of water and wine! Details at www.ragapplelassie.com.

One last thing: don't forget, we now have a Triangle Tasting Room in addition to our Boonville Tasting Room and both locations have 'something' happening regularly, so check the websites for details!

Hello Folks:

Frank’s knee is back 100%. Frank’s special Aunt Edith, who gets around as good as a fifty year old, celebrated her 96th Birthday this week and maybe, just maybe, Spring has arrived in the Yadkin Valley for the season.  Plus, happily, we can say that the Chardonnay seems to be the only variety with significant frost damage and today, Sergio and crew are busy planting tobacco!

Also, this week, in addition to great weather, we were blessed with visits from fans and friends from Florida to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between.  And this friends is what makes being here every day so special!  Unlike many environments, RagApple Lassie gives us energy rather than than  depleting it! Life is good!!

On the grandson front, the two oldest grandsons, attended their Senior Prom on Saturday night and exercising grandparent rights, we can say we are sure they were the most handsome young men there!  And Frank and Lenna had almost as much fun reminiscing about the time many, many years ago when Frank came all the way to Piney Creek to go to a big dance with me!.

One last thing:  Don’t forget, we now have a Triangle Tasting Room in addition to our Boonville Tasting Room and both locations have have ‘something’ happening regularly, so check the websites for details!

RagApple Lassie is injured but thankful and blessed!

Well, Mother Nature has thrown us a curve!!! Last Wednesday and again Saturday night, the temps were below 29 degrees so needless to say, every grape vine with a green leaf showing (read 75% of our plants) was blackened!!!!

And as sad as we are, we acknowledge that many, many other people all across the US have already suffered much greater losses. At least, we still have a home that has not been flooded and vines that will produce again - just not this year!!

So on to other subjects!!!

First, I have a ‘message’ to friends of Julia who resides in the Boonville Cemetary. Apparently said friends have thoughtfullly brought libations regularly for her enjoyment ‘cause she never expected such to be available in Yadkin County!!!! The ‘message’ is: “Julia would love some more Boonville Blanc!!”

And as of this week, the weather is supposed to warm up and be more spring like! So Lenna has
been busy planning interesting and exciting events - just for you! Of course, our awesome wines are always available for tasting and remember many offer our now famous “LPR” benefit! If you do not know about “LPR,” check out our Facebook Page!!!

Remember, we now have a Triangle location and all of us are looking forward to seeing you soon!

March showers brought May flowers - in April - to RagApple Lassie!

It looks like May and feels like January!!!!  The April showers began in March which brought the May flowers in April!!! And the  conundrum continues!   One day it will be sunny and 75+ degrees.  The next day frost warnings will be issued and the cycle conitnues!!

As to the grapes - pruning is finished and the Chardonnay wants desperately to show off their new leaves so Frank’s Tractor has been busy as a bee spraying the vines with a harmless potion that will protect new leaves from cold and frost!!!

The good news is that Lenna has been busy planning lots of fun events for your summer pleasure!  Of course, RagApple Lassie awesome wine tastings are always available for you to enjoy and new additions include a great Comedian roaming the tasting room, Food Trucks on site with yummy eats, Library Wine Tastings in the Cellar,  musicians showcasing  original music and  Vineyard Tours with Frank.

So be sure to check the websites: www.ragapplelassie.com and www.doylesvineyard.com for regular updates.  You’ll be amazed!

RagApple Lassie sends Easter peace and joy to one and all!

Holy Cow!!! March is certainly behaving like the proverbial Lion! Last week was just incredible. Lots of sunny 75 degree days, beautiful spring flowers, blooming Bradford Pear Trees already showing leaves, Frank pacing with worry that the grape vines would break bud too soon and Frank getting a torn knee meniscus repaired (he is already fine as can be and walking like nothing happened). And now, it’s gray, 40 degrees, and a forecast of freezing temps and snow for the next couple of days!!!!!

BUT, much warmer weather is expected by next weekend - just in time for Easter - so don’t forget your SPECIAL EASTER SUNDAY INVITATION for a 7:00 AM Easter Sunrise Service in the Vineyards at RagApple Lassie hosted by Boonville United Methodist Church.

Looking over a misty meadow watching the sun rise behind Pilot Mountain as an acappela choir sings the glorious songs of Easter is a joyous experience that will remain in your heart for months. Everyone is invited and welcome and we hope you will come join us! Chairs will be available or you may bring a lawn chair. Breakfast will follow the service in the Boonville Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

The RagApple Sweet Lady introducing stunningly beautiful, MOOooliciously good, handcrafted Easter treats for sharing, gifting, or simply enjoying will be here at RagApple Lassie again this weekend!! And you won’t want to miss this ‘sweet’ artist!!!!

BREAKING NEWS! Since the music licensing agencies have put the kabash on musicians playing
cover music without the venue buying a very expensive license, RagApple Lassie is taking a different tact for your enjoyment! So, mark your calendars now for May 28, Memorial Day Weekend, when RagApple Lassie welcomes nationally renowned, rib splitting Comic Genius, LES LONG! LES is a North Carolina native highly sought after for his clean, unpredictable spontaneous humor and ability to casually mingle, engage, and entertain one and all!

And don’t forget., check out the websites below for event particulars for Boonville and Durham. Fun things are always going on!

RagApple Lassie welcomes March and Spring - maybe!!!

Since our traditional harbingers of spring: daffodils, forsythia, tulip trees, cherry trees, and my favorite, the Frog Concerts seem to confirm that Spring is on the way, please, please pray for NO late frosts. And as May 15th, two months from now, is traditionally the last frost date, ALL prayers will be needed and appreciated!!!

However on schedule, the spring ritual of pruning the grape vines is finished and a BIG pile of prunings has been delivered to the winery. So YOU are invited to come visit RagApple Lassie at your convenience to make as many grapevine wreaths as you desire and there is NO charge!

THIS weekend, come meet The Sweet Lady introducing stunningly beautiful, MOOooliciously good, handcrafted Easter treats for sharing, gifting, or simply enjoying!!

SPECIAL INVITATION - EASTER SUNDAY - March 27th - A 7:00 AM Easter Sunrise Service in the Vineyards at RagApple Lassie hosted by Boonville United Methodist Church.

Everyone is invited and welcome and we hope you will come join us! Chairs will be available or you may bring a lawn chair. Hello Folks:   February has been a mix of at least a dozen weather scenarios and is bidding adieu today amidst Robins and Cardinals hunting for lunch and the pond frogs practicing for their annual spring concerts.  And just a week ago, we had freezing temps!!!! But if Robins are here and Spring is just 20 days away, it is time to get all the grape vines pruned and shaped for this year’s harvest ‘cause' bud break is on the way!!!

This past weekend was the second week-end of the Annual Yadkin Reds food and wine pairing and it was a huge success!  All tickets were sold and there was a long waiting list just in case more tickets became available, so the moral of this story is - when it is announced next year, don’t delay!!!

As a part of our continuing legacy as a fun place to visit, RagApple Lassie is looking for a ‘wanna be’ comedian/class clown/talk to anybody type of person for informal floating gigs. One does not need to have a ‘show’ - just the ability to entertain!!!

Tomorrow is March 1, Spring arrives on March 20th, and Easter is March 27th.  Hence the Annual Easter Sunrise Service in the vineyards here at RagApple Lassie!  So mark your calendars now and more details will follow!

Check websites for the complete calendar of events and we shall look forward to seeing you soon!

A RagApple Lassie February – WILD as usual!!

Holy Cow!  Another week of insane weather!  Warming trends  with a couple of inches of rain was forecast for the beginning of the week!!!!  What we received was freezing temps with sleet and freezing rain on top of four inches of snow that turned our world into a Doctor Zhivago scene!  And of course all the ice led to a 20 hour  power outage.   Now, just three days later now, it is 55 plus degrees with sunshine!!!!  Hence many of our spring bulbs are up and the forsythia bush is showing color. Frank says, "Mother Nature is just making sure that we  all remember who is in charge!!!!!"

And February is not over yet!
FRIDAY, February 26 brings another of Chef Christian Froelich’s famous six course Wine Dinners, with RagApple Lassie and Sanders Ridge wines, at his Hearth Restaurant and a few seats are still available. Visit www.ragappleLassie.com for menu and details or call 336-367-6000  for information and reservations.

And of course, our Triangle location at Doyle’s Vineyard on  Highway 751 in Durham has many fun events planned also.  Details can be found at www.doylesvineyard.com.

____________________________________________________________As of Sunday, RagApple Lassie wines have been a part of NINE engagements!

What a weekend!!!! Bitter cold, LOVE, romance, joy, and SNOW! Dozens of you came with your special someone for our annual Valentine Wine and Chocolate Pairing or to taste everything!!! But best of all was the heartwarming experience of observing folks, from 25 to 85 interacting with their special ‘one.' I am happy to report that Romance is alive and well!!

As most of you already know, Lenna thought typical wine descriptions were dull and did nothing to entice one to enjoy same. Hence all RagApple Lassie wines have the personality of a seductive female, so it will be no surprise that Kaleidoscope Red was the top selling wine this weekend!!! With a description like it has, how could it not be!!! And I quote: “Wrapping together," this mouth watering signature blend of Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and the Cabs: Franc and Sauvignon are the deep, rich black fruits of black cherry and plum sprinkled with the suggestion of anise. Just like good sex, this delightful full bodied jewel of a wine teases the palate with a hint of sweetness and a promise of spirit in its long, lingering finish!

And February is not over yet!

Something to Think About
No Ag—No Super Bowl

Well, THE weekend is upon us. It’s the Super Bowl. While our Panthers are playing, I’m probably more interested in the commercials and THE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With that in mind let’s think about how Agriculture actually makes the Super Bowl possible.

First, there’s the pigskin (actually cow skin). No football, no Super Bowl!! Just in case you’re ever on Jeopardy and need to know this or you just want to impress your friends on Sunday, one cow hide will make about 20 footballs. On average 120 footballs are used in a Super Bowl, but the way Cam Newton is giving them away we might need more this year. Did you also know there are different footballs for kicking, usually 12 or so. This means six cows will make the ultimate sacrifice for the game and never get the credit; the pig gets it (remember, the pigskin). Cows always get the hind teat!

Second, it is estimated that 1.25 BILLION chicken wings will be consumed. For those not especially knowledgeable about chickens that equates to 625 million chickens that`are getting their wings clipped! Isn’t clipping illegal in football? Anyway, that’s enough wings to circle the Grand Canyon 120 times.

Third, 326,000,000 GALLONS of beer will be consumed. That means 6,145,132.74 bushels of barley are used to make the brews for the game, and therefore shouldn’t barley farmers be the real MVP’s?

Fourth, it is estimated that 139 MILLION pounds of avocados will become guacamole in the next few days. That’s enough avocados to cover the football field end to end 53 feet deep with avocados. Don’t think Payton or Cam can throw that hard!

Fifth, this is one of my favorites, RIBS!!!!!! 10 MILLION pounds of these will be sold for the game. Finally, some justice for the poor cows who have a lot of “skin” in the game! All I can say is there are gonna be lots of sticky fingers on Sunday.

Sixth, over 11 MILLION pounds of potato chips will increase the salt intake of those watching the game. It takes about 4 pounds of raw potatoes to make 1 pound of chips so potato farmers will be feeding over 45,000,000 pounds of spuds to folks on Sunday. That’s in one day folks. Whole lotta peeling going on!

Seventh, 14,000,000,000 (That’s 14 BILLION to those who can’t count all those zeros) hamburgers will be consumed this weekend. If each patty is a quarter of a pound, that’s 3.5 BILLION pounds of hamburger landing on their buns this weekend! Kuechly is good, but it takes some heft to put that much meat on their buns.

Eighth, 4 MILLION pizzas will be devoured. That equates to about 2 MILLION pounds of cheese or 200,000 pounds of whole milk. Once again, the cows are carrying the load!

Ninth and finally, 4 MILLION pounds of popcorn, 8 MILLION pounds of tortilla chips (Doritos loves you), and 3 MILLION pounds of nuts will be consumed. (Not talking about those folks who paid so much for seats here).
So where would the big game be without farmers? Well, certainly not where we will be Sunday. So this Sunday before you enjoy the big game, let’s give some credit where it’s due…the farmers who feed, clothe and provide shelter for us every day.

Go Panthers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RagApple Lassie says: Hello! We survived! and Go Panthers!!!!

Holy Cow! RagApple Lassie has just been closed for the longest period of time in its history! Thanks to the blizzard of January 2016, we were closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday! We’ve enjoyed ten plus inches of snow, constant below freezing temps, gray skies, hurricane strength winds moving the snow around like a cloud of talcum powder, and not a single call from anyone (we usually get a dozen or so every day) asking if we would be open ‘tomorrow!’

However, all’s well that ends well! And this too shall pass! We knew there would be a price to pay for a summer Christmas. And by spring, it will be just another winter memory!!

But, I do want it noted in the historical records that will be unearthed hundreds of years from now that the folks at RagApple Lassie predicted in 2016 that the world is on the cusp of a huge climate change!!! And as a bit of evidence, remember that the much loved arrowhead pendant ‘bauble’ that Lenna wears all the time was found on their farm in Yadkin County, a half a continent away from its original location, and has been carbon dated to 12,000 BC which was before the Ice Age and the birth of the obstacle known today as the Mississippi River! So, who knows, how our world will look when you and our ancestors are reading this ‘bit of history!’

Check out RagApple Lassie's Win-Win, compliments of Mother Nature and an option to taste wines FREE!!!

Holy Cow! What a December!!! Record setting temperature extremes all across the planet have made us all aware of how mystifying Mother Nature's mood swings can be and how truly blessed we are!

Here in the Yadkin Valley, it seems like spring! Warm temps have set new records almost daily, constant intermittent showers have turned the grass spring green, every bare spot of ground is muddy and newly planted winter wheat crops are already inches high. And on Christmas Day, it was so warm we turned on the air conditioning in our home.

And to complicate our lives, our oldest computer - the one with all the RagApple Lassie Wine Club information crashed dreadfully during one of the several recent thunder storms and the information we have been able to recover is very spotty so we must begin at the beginning!!!!

Hence, our loss is your gain!!!! If you are a 'card carrying' member of the original RagApple Lassie Wine Club, bring your official membership card and claim one FREE bottle of your favorite wine in exchange for your effort and information, so we can re-establish your Wine Club membership. And to sweeten the pot further, RagApple Lassie will give you an additional 5% discount on new case purchases on the day of your visit!! Normal case discounts for wine club members are 20%, but on this occasion, you will get a 25% case discount! (Specific RagApple Lassie Wine Club details can be found on our website: www.ragapplelassie.com).

Many fun activities, beginning with "Boxing Day" Tastings are being planned as we write 2016, so check out our website regularly.

Boxing Day is an old English tradition of sharing ones good fortune with folks less fortunate -----SO-----bring non-perishable food donations (or CASH) to donate to the Yadkin County Food Ministry and get a free RagApple Lassie Wine Tasting in exchange - from now through January 3rd!!!

Savory and Sweet Wine and Food Pairing at RagApple Lassie this weekend!!

This past week has been so uniquely unique weather wise. Seventy degree days filled with
glorious sunshine kept my mental calendar totally discombotchulated. The traditional calendar says “December” but the actual temps say “June!”

So, ready or not, whether naughty or nice, RagApple Lassie has lots of enticing goodies: wine bottle slumped cheese trays, cracker/olive/nut bowls, sexy black tee shirts all a-glitter with our rhinestone logo, wine bottle ‘ice tea’ glasses, logo cocktail napkins, custom gift baskets and oodles more! You’ll just have to come see for yourself!

RagApple Lassie is open daily, noon to six, except Christmas Eve and Day, so you can shop at your leisure, sample our awesome ‘Ladies of the Vines Wine,' and just enjoy the season.

And RagApple Lassie, Sanders Ridge and Sweet Home Carolina are welcoming the Holidays with a Savory and Sweet Wine Pairing. Each winery will showcase two wines accompanied with complementing foods made by the famous Chef Christian of Hearth Restaurant fame, Saturday and Sunday, December 19 and 20, $20 per person. Reservations are required and can be made at either of the three wineries.

As we approach the upcoming holidays, our wish for each of you is that every minute is filled with love, joy, laughter, peace and wonderment! We are blessed to count you among our friends and we thank you immensely for your support.

____________________________________________________________

Happy Thanksgiving from RagApple Lassie!

First and foremost to each of you, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and please know that we are most thankful for your support and kindness. Without you, RagApple Lassie would still be just a ‘gleam’ in our eyes!

And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, this morning Marlo Thomas told the story on the TODAY Show of her father, Danny Thomas’ impetus to found the world famous St. Jude’s Children Hospital. If you have a few minutes, I am sure you can ‘Google’ her comments. You will need a couple of Kleenex but your heart will be changed forever!

Here in the valley, the weather roller coaster continues! Delightfully pleasant one day, cold gray fog the next, warm sunny skies today, and bone chilling twenty degrees is in the forecast for tonight. Mother Nature is behaving like a young lady that changes clothes seven or eight times because she just cannot decide what to wear!!!! And because ‘she’ can’t, I can’t !!!

As usual, RagApple Lassie will be open every day, noon to six, except Thanksgiving
Day, for wine sipping, relaxing and/or shopping. And speaking of shopping, Saturday, November 28th, is “Shop Small” day in North Carolina, so please remember to shop local for the holidays. Many businesses, including RagApple Lassie are locally owned by your friends and neighbors, and support from you folks is vital to everyone’s success!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! May your blessings be many!

The RagApple Lassie "BEAN" reveal!!!

As promised the official "bean" count of the cow container full of beans is 1,758! Zillions of you made your best guess and THREE of you won a bottle of the promised Hobson's Choice Reserve Wine!! Many thanks to all who joined in the fun and stay tuned to learn what the grandsons come up with next!!

My mind thinks the "Holidays" were just a couple of months ago but reality is 'screaming' it's Holiday time again!!!! Frank and I actually saw a popular shopping center already sporting its Holiday finery!! Like I have said many times, the older one gets, the quicker time flies!

So, FYI, RagApple Lassie will be open every day except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and in addition to our awesome wines, our shelves are stocked with caps, visors, tee shirts, repurposed wine bottle vases, cheese trays, cracker dishes, cocktail napkins, peanut brittle and lots of other goodies for gifting to yourself or friends!! Plus, we offer custom-made gift baskets and of course, we can easily make and ship wine baskets to clients, to colleagues, friends and family or anyone you would like to honor with a gift.

We also have wonderful musicians, playing original music each Saturday for your listening pleasure. Visit our website, www.ragapplelassie.com for the schedule. You will be wowed by the talent of these special artists!

And speaking of events, the RagApple Lassie Tasting Room at Doyle's Vineyards and Events in Durham is ONE YEAR OLD!! Like I said earlier, time flies when you're having fun and this past year is no exception! Check out the website. www.doylesvineyards.com for upcoming events AND TO PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY PARTIES!!

Come sample a RagApple Lassie 'October' at the intersection of Great Wine and
A Jolly Good Time!

Holy Cow! What a month! But all's well that ends well!!!! The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Yadkinville ended up with a glorious fall day and the Low Country Boil here at RagApple Lassie was great! Plus, harvesting of all our crops from grapes to tobacco was miraculously finished just hours before the GREAT FROST arrived for a four night visit!!!!

Throughout this whole month, we have been honored to welcome visitors from many states and countries (yes, the word is spreading about what is happening here in the Yadkin Valley) and without hesitation, Frank says with a big smile that this year's wine will be awesome! According to him, the quality and quantity are the best ever!!! As to all the other crops,"no comment!"

YOU ARE INVITED! For most of us here in the 21stCentury, there are few opportunities to connect ancient traditions with our daily lives, hence through the kindness and collaboration of professional Falconer Eric Harrold, friends of RagApple Lassie are being offered the opportunity to experience an actual falconry excursion. If you are interested in an 'in the wild' excursion any time from November through March, here on the Hobson Farm with a trained hawk falcon or eagle, call 336-367-6000 to schedule your date. Cost is $50.00 per person and each guest must be at least fourteen years old.

And one last bit of information!! One does not have to go all the way to the mountains to see spectacular leaves. Frank and I both say that the leaves here in the Yadkin Valley are the most colorful they have been in our lifetimes!!! So, come see for yourself!!!
____________________________________________________________

RagApple Lassie reminds you, it's LOW COUNTRY BOIL time!!! RESERVE NOW!!!

Wow, wow, wow, what a wild two weeks!! And yes, we've had RAIN almost every day. Fortunately, we've suffered no real damage. Some crops still in the fields are showing signs of too much rain and of course, every inch of ground whether grass or dirt feels like a sponge underfoot so......... concessions have been made by everyone, but using the old adage 'all's well that ends well' - we are well!!!!

A beautiful, sweet bride, who had chosen RagApple Lassie months ago for her wedding, exemplified the grace and poise that only a few possess and moved her wedding from the Lawn Pavilion at RagApple Lassie to the Rockford Preservation Society's Rockford Methodist Church in the Village of Rockford. This lovely wooden church has a Ben Long-like fresco of Jesus, with arms opened in welcome to all, standing on the plains of Galilee with Pilot Mountain, and the Mount of Olives, in the background! And all agreed, the move was itself a blessing!!!!

Hence, in addition to its usual Saturday traffic including a bus group of 40 from Charlotte, another group of 14, RagApple Lassie happily moved the wedding reception of 200 people from the RagApple Lassie lawn as planned into the Tasting Room - and a wonderful time was had by all!!!! So like we said - all's well that ends well!!!!

Reminder: The Yadkin Wine Festival showcasing the wines and wineries of the Yadkin
Valley will be October 17th in Yadkinville. More information and tickets are available at www.yvgf.com

AND, immediately following the festival, October 17th, HARRY'S BAR (Frank's favorite dive), is bringing its famous LOW COUNTRY BOIL to RagApple Lassie Vineyards beginning at 5:00 P.M. Come, eat your fill of crab legs, shrimp, Italian sausage, corn on the cob, and red bliss potatoes accompanied by cole slaw, TWO glasses of your favorite RagApple Lassie wine, drawn butter, and cocktail sauce, finished off with divine chocolate brownies. $45.00 per person, Wine Club Members $40.00 per person, Barrel Club Members-NO charge. Call 336-367-6000 for reservations and DON'T DELAY - IT'S ALWAYS A SELL-OUT!

We're looking forward to seeing you soon!

Today is RagApple Lassie's Birthday!!!

RagApple Lassie Winery is now a TEENAGER !! RagApple Lassie Tasting Room opened to the public on September 21, 2002, and Lenna and Frank can definitely attest that 'this' baby is no different than any other baby!!!!

We've glowed with pride, blessed her structure with love and prayer, had sleepless nights, days of sheer joy, wondered how on earth we thought this was a good idea, lovingly introduced her to zillions of visitors who came from far and near just to meet her, watched in amazement as she was filmed for all sorts of occasions and now, thirteen years later we are mystified and proud of the promise this child exhibits!!!!

So Happy, Happy Birthday, RagApple Lassie!

And in celebration of RagApple Lassie's Birthday, Frank's Malmaison Roses are in full bloom! You will remember that Frank grew these beautiful roses from a seed pod secured from Chateau de Malmaison, the home of Josephine and Napoleon just outside Paris!!

One of our fondest memories harks back to Opening Day! An hour before opening time, a kindly elder gentleman came tripping down the stairs with the agility of a teenager asking gently, "Am I first - I want to be your first customer and I want a case of everything." And now, our very first customer is a dear, dear friend who makes an annual pilgrimage from Florida just to get his winter's supply of Merlot and other RagApple Lassie Wines!

And the icing on the cake has been the RagApple Lassie babies we've welcomed over the years with the pride and joy of any 'grandparent.' As of today, we have seven RagApple Lassie babies, in addition to our own four wonderful grandsons, who have a special connection to us. Just yesterday, the parents of RagApple Lassie baby number seven, brought him to meet us and his connection is that his parents were married here at RagApple Lassie four years ago!

Do come visit soon! Our wines are 'MOO'licious and something fun is always happening here - and in Durham at the new RagApple Lassie Tasting Room. Visit for more details.

RagApple Lassie welcomes fall and the return of live music!!!!

Last week I mused "how can it be September ALREADY?" Today I am bemoaning that September is already half-over and just this morning, fall even made a brief but early appearance causing us to reach for a jacket!!! And we've just enjoyed another fun week!
Labor Day Week, we had visitors from the 'proverbial four corners of the earth' and this last week we had visitors from all over the United States!! Two of which spent an extra night in the Valley just so they could come to RagApple Lassie because we were so highly recommended by folks they met at the tasting bar of another Yadkin Valley winery!!! Another example of the power of 'word of mouth' advertising!!!

Harvest continues. All our white grapes are picked and on the way to being another
stellar vintage of RagApple Lassie wine. Picking of red grapes will follow in ten or so days. And the winery will smell especially divine for the next several weeks so come and inhale deeply!!! It's worth the trip plus the Cricket Choir (inside) and the Katydid Chorus (outside) happily entertain daily! Come listen at your leisure and a glass of RagApple Lassie wine only enhances the moment!!

Reminder: Our annual LOW COUNTRY BOIL is October 17th and reservations are rolling in. So, if you would like to attend call soon so we can get your name in the pot!!

Our Durham location, Doyle's Vineyards and Events located at 8913 NC Highway 751, Durham. (919)316-1903 is open daily also. Something fun is always going on, including FREE Friday night movies, Thursday night Yoga Classes, and one time events. Visit www.doylesvineyard.com for event details!

Happy Labor Day from Ragapple Lassie!!!!!

Hello Folks:

Holy Cow!!! How can it be September ALREADY?? Guess this proves the old adage that says 'time flies when you are having fun' and that we are!!

Labor Day Weekend brought us visitors from the 'proverbial four corners of the earth' including Russia, Guatemala, Canada, Florida, California, Spain, Hong Kong and lots of places in between!

Harvest continues and Frank is pleased! Grapes like hot dry weather at harvest time. It's all the other crops that are suffering for lack of rain!! So any and all help with the Rain Makers would be much appreciated. They seem to have tired of my rain dances. But the Katydid Chorus continues happily and loudly. However, as loud as it is, to us, it is soothing and joyful. You are welcome to come listen at your leisure and a glass of Ragapple Lassie wine in your hand only enhances the moment!!

The September issue of Our State Magazine offered a web exclusive 4-Day Guide of where to sip, stay, dine and do in the Yadkin Valley and RagApple Lassie is a Day Three recommendation!!

Reminder: Our annual LOW COUNYRY BOIL is October 17th and details are on our website. And YES, that means our newly revised website is finally complete, so take a look and let us know what we left off that would be helpful to you. The Events Page will be updated daily and it's 'mobile' friendly with a secure shopping cart! Check it out: www.ragapplelassie.com.

Reminder No. 2 Our Durham location, Doyle's Vineyards and Events, is located at 8913 NC Highway 751, Durham. (919) 316-1903 is open daily also. Check out www.doylesvineyard.com for event details!

Harvest has begun at RagApple Lassie!!

In our part of the world, school began this week and we are already missing the grandsons. It has been wonderful having some combination of the four here at the winery most of the summer. And, now we must stand in line behind school, sports, friends, and girls ( heaven forbid) for a visit!! Such is youth and such is the lot of grandparents!!!!

However, Harvest has now begun and the Katydid Chorus is happily applauding - loudly!!! Our ever popular Chardonnay was picked yesterday and the grapes were as beautiful as the Chardonnay is good!!

Reminder No. 1: We have another week of Car'moo'val. RagApple Lassie's version of fun and games. Come try your hand at 'simple' carnival games where the prize is WINE - not a stuffed animal!!!

Reminder No. 2: Dog Days of Summer Special - good now through Labor Day - a FREE tasting with the purchase of six bottles of wine OR buy a case of wine and get a bottle of Evening Sunset Dessert Wine FREE. What a cool way to make the
heat bearable!!!

Reminder No. 3: Our annual LOW COUNTRY BOIL is October 17th and details are on the website. And YES, that means our newly revised website is finally complete, so take a look and let us know what we left off that would be helpful to you. The Frog Chorus at Ragapple Lassie has been practicing all weekend!
February 26, 2014 by ragapplelassie

Over the last ten days, Mother Nature has teased us with 17 inches of snow and freezing temps followed by a few days of more moderate temps and then for grins and giggles threw in a couple of 65 degree days with soul warming sunshine!!! But just to make sure we did not decide Winter was over, she left some snow on North facing slopes! And according to famous Punxsutawney Phil, winter is not over yet!!!

But I have to tell you that the Frog Chorus that we all enjoy so much in the spring spent all weekend practicing!! So spring can’t be too far behind!!

On the grandson front, Mama Lenna and Papa Frank are proud to say that all four grandsons earned spots on the A-B Honor Roll. So come buy lots of wine. Our pockets are depleted as we pay cash for A’s and B’s !!!!

We always have live music on Saturdays, so come spend a leisurely afternoon at RagApple Lassie sampling awesome wines, (this week we welcome Sandy Herrault on the violin and keyboard), watching the ‘game’ or keeping up with the score on TV, test your jigsaw puzzle prowess, meeting new friends, or just relaxing!!

We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

As promised, February at RagApple Lassie is NOT boring!

February 19, 2014 by ragapplelassie

As predicted, last week’s weather was for the record books! Mother Nature began with hours of heavy snow, followed by hours of sleet and freezing rain, and then bid adieu with hours of soft fluffy snow. And as if apologizing for a horrid twenty-four hours, the final snow decorated every limb and twig so beautifully that it took one’s breath! In fact, I willingly and joyfully squandered hours just admiring Mother Nature’s handiwork!

“Neither sleet nor snow, etc. …” shall keep Cupid from its appointed rounds. Saturday’s Annual Valentine Wine Lunches (which were a sell-out prior to the snows) did not have a single cancellation!!! In fact, the phone rang constantly on Friday making sure WE had not cancelled the lunch!!!!

And now for a true story that will warm your heart! Friday evening (Valentine’s Day) about five o’clock, we made a quick stop at a small local grocery for one needed item. There were two men in line in front of me in the check-out lane: one about 35 and one about 80. They both had a bud vase of roses in their hands and it was obvious they knew each other. After exchanging a couple of pleasantries, the younger man, with dancing eyes and a teasing smile, said in a tongue and cheek sort of way, with no malice whatsoever: “Ed, I kinda know what I will get for this,” as he held up the vase of flowers in his hand, “So what do you think you’ll get?” Without a second’s hesitation and the sweetest of smiles, Ed quietly said, “This is a thank you for 58 years worth of dividends!” Everyone should be so lucky to have an “Ed” in their life and I do, but his name is Frank!!!

As a reminder, the second weekend of the Yadkin Winter Reds is Saturday and Sunday. More information is available at http://www.visityadkin.com.

Think Spring and come see us soon!

Rainbows and joy,
Lenna and Frank
